HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A man was arrested after a physical altercation with family members led to a gunshot.

According to the Horry County Police Department, 35-year-old Wilford Davis of Elizabethtown, NC was arrested in connection to the domestic dispute.

HCPD officers responded to a residence on Ware Drive in Nichols around 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Police say when they arrived to the scene, one of the victim's had a bruise around his eye, and said the suspect arrived to the home after the victim arrived from fishing. The victim said after unhooking his boat, he went inside to tell the suspect to leave. Police say the victim went to a bedroom to get a firearm, and when he came out the suspect punched him, causing the swelling around his eye. According to the police report, the victim's wife tried to stop the physical altercation between the victim and the suspect. The victim's wife started to push the suspect toward the door, and once the suspect was outside he began to push toward the residence, officials say. The victim then fired the handgun in an attempt to strike the suspect, according to the report.

According to police, the victim advised that the round that he fired struck the steps of the residence. The suspect fled the scene after the shot was fired, police say. Police say they located a shell casing inside the residence. The victim had prior violent encounters with the victim, according to police. Both victims agreed that the suspect was not welcomed in their home, officials stated.

Police located the suspect and detained him. According to a responding officer, based on the circumstances, the victim fired his weapon to “stop a perceived threat”.

Davis was taken into custody for trespassing after being warned and assault and battery in the third degree, according to police. The report states that Davis was taken to Loris Hospital Emergency Department for an injury he received to his hand during the altercation. He was then transported to J. Reuben Long Detention Center, police say.

A court date has been scheduled for May 26 at 9 a.m. for this case, according to officials.
