MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach is again getting national attention – this time for a short film documenting a “social experiment” that now has hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

The video shows a woman strutting down Ocean Boulevard in “stripper garb” and a reflective mask. It's what happens at about 10:20 that has the internet in an uproar.

Warning: Video contains language and graphic scenes. Viewer discretion is advised. Mobile users, watch the video here.

The masked person in this film is Signe Pierce, a performance artist who likes to perform in reality.  Pierce makes the streets a stage to see what reaction may follow when people see someone dressed and acting like Pierce is in the film.

Pierce never answers to anyone in the crowd or says anything in the film, but admits to becoming more provocative as time goes on in response to the crowd's actions. Some of the people in the film started throwing bottles and water at Pierce, and ultimately you can see a woman run up and shove Pierce to the ground.

Pierce and filmmaker Alli Coates said some might see this film as more of a stunt than anything else, but Coates says that is not the case.

Coates said the film shows a social experiment, one that Coates says viewers will watch, and walk away with an opinion based on values they feel strongly about.

"Whether it's race or gender, or class or anything like that, we just had no intention going into this video about any of those things," added Coates. "It just inherently happened because that's how real society works," Coates said.
