SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Right now, it costs you $1.25 an hour to park in metered spaces in Surfside Beach, but that isn't the case at two lots in town that sit just off the beach -- where this summer you can park for just 50 cents per hour.
It's a decision that if taken at face value might not make much sense at first, but it's a choice town council basically viewed as simple.
To cut the price of meter rates at the parking lot on the north end of town near the Holiday Inn and on the south end off Ocean Boulevard on 13th Avenue South.
Just not enough people are parking in either lot, meaning the town isn't making much money from these spaces, so the town is dropping the rates from 1.25 to 50 cents an hour. And the city is hoping the cheapest prices in town will be too good for people to pass up -- going after what one council member calls the "bargain customer" who might not even know these lots exist at the moment.
"There is a parking lot that people have a hard time finding so we're going to improve signage there, but we are also going to reduce the rate there to 50 cents an hour to try and get more people to use that lot," said Mayor Doug Samples.
These 50 cent and hour rates will only be for this parking season and depending on how this trial run goes, council could decide to bring them back next year or try something new.
