Bikefest Task Force Team meets one last time before Memorial Day

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The Bikefest task force team met one last time Wednesday to talk about the final safety plans for Memorial Day Weekend.  A big topic of discussion heading into May has been the traffic loop which will cover just about the entire Grand Strand.

The 23-mile loop that will run overnight during Bikefest involves most side roads connecting to the loop to be blocked and manned by troopers and patrols.

However, police say law enforcement will try and work with drivers to make things run smoothly.

For example, if you need to get off the loop to get home, you may have to tell officers where you are heading or be asked to show them your license to prove where you live.

The Bikefest task force team admits that the weekend overall will be a fluid situation and the safety plan in place may be adjusted as the weekend goes along.

“I think we've played the what-if game as much as we can for getting ready,” said Randy Webster with Horry County Emergency Management.  “You know we may be missing something; I'm not sure, but it's not because we haven't tried."

For nearly a year, business owners like Nathan West have done their best to keep up with all the details of the safety plan for Memorial Day weekend.  West said he likes what officials came up with to try and keep Myrtle Beach from going through the violence of last year again..

“You know people save their hard earned money and come from Wisconsin, Michigan,  Chicago and all over to come to Myrtle Beach,” added West.  “The last thing we need is a tragedy."
