Largest soccer tourney to be held April 25-26

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The largest soccer tournament ever held in South Carolina will be held in North Myrtle Beach April 25-26, according to city officials.

The 7th annual McDonald's Coast Spring Classic, hosted by Coast FA Youth Soccer Club, will be held April 25-26 in Horry County with competition occurring at Grand Park Athletic Complex, Michael Nash Fields, Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium and Ashley Booth Field in Myrtle Beach; the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex in North Myrtle Beach; Socastee Park in Socastee; and South Strand Recreation Park near Surfside Beach.

According to Tournament Director Heyward Gulledge, 370 teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia are scheduled to play 603 matches on 42 fields in Horry County.

“This year's tournament has attracted about 100 more teams than last year,” Gulledge said. “We conservatively estimate that the two-day tournament will have a direct economic impact of $3.5 million on Horry County.”

The cities of North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach and Horry County have partnered to host the event.

“We are excited to once again partner with Myrtle Beach and Horry County to host this prestigious event,” said North Myrtle Beach Superintendent of Recreation & Sports Tourism Matt Gibbons. “The McDonald's Coast Spring Classic is a great example of the impact sports tourism can have on our communities during a time of year when we need it most. We look forward to participating as a host for many years to come.”

“The annual Spring Classic has become a staple of our spring sports tourism season,” said City of Myrtle Beach Sports Tourism Director Tim Huber. “By combining our resources with those of North Myrtle Beach and Horry County and the team at Coast FA we have all managed to create a tremendous weekend for Horry County.”
