Darlington Raceway makes updates ahead of Labor Day race

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - The Bojangles' Southern 500 will air on WMBF News in less than five months.

A lot of work is going into making sure this year's race is unforgettable.

"We took the 1974 ticket and replicated it, so everyone who comes to the Bojangles' Southern 500 will get a ticket that looks similar to the one we had here back in 1974," said Chip Wile, Darlington Raceway President.

The folks at the track said a lot of planning and details went into replicating this year's ticket, everything down to the font size and even the ticket's background.

Right now, the area which serves at the gift shop, is getting a complete overhaul. It has been downsized to give more room for operations.

"We're remodeling our gift shop and we are adding some office space here. We are running out of space, we needed to provide our folks who work hard each and every day a good place to work," Wile said.

Just on the other side of the gift shop, inside of the Stock Car Museum new additions have been added including the car which carried Denny Haling to victory at the track in 2010.

While there is a lot going on inside of the facility, more space has also been given to you the fans.

"Our Turn One Tunnel has been here since 1950 and a really unique part of our racetrack. We felt like it was a great canvas for us to celebrate each and every winner who has ever been to Victory Lane at Darlington Raceway," Wile said.

For the first time, fans will able to walk through the turn one tunnel, which runs under the track. Names and pictures of the greats like Jeff Gordon, Ricky Caven and many others all dawn the space.

"We are doing a lot of work to our suites, updating each and every one of those. You know when people come to the racetrack they have an expectation and we owe it to them to provide a great experience."

Staff at the track are really excited and bragging about the work that has taken shape on the Turn Three Tunnel, which is how just about everybody gets in and out of the center of the track.

"It's kind of each decade of how we got here. It starts in the 50's and runs through the future and it's really cool as you are driving into the raceway that you feel the nostalgia of Darlington Raceway," Wile said.

New this year, track leaders have added a classic car show. That show will take place in September and those who bring a classic car will get two free tickets to the Bojangles' Southern 500.
