SLED statement identifies suspect, officers involved in shooting

 MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - On Friday afternoon, the State Law Enforcement Division released a statement about the officer-involved shooting that took place in Myrtle Beach Thursday. The statement identifies the suspect that was shot, and the officers that were involved.

SLED CONDUCTING OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING INVESTIGATION IN MYRTLE BEACH

Agents of the S.C. Law Enforcement Division continue work today in their investigation of an incident in which a man was shot by officers of the 15th Judicial Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit as they attempted to serve a search warrant and arrest warrants on the man in Myrtle Beach Thursday.

A team of SLED crime scene specialists and investigators worked past Midnight at the scene on Withers Swash Drive where the suspect, a black male, identified as Julian Ray Betton, 30, was shot. The three 15th Judicial Circuit DEU officers involved in the incident are white males. The officers have been identified as Frank Waddell of the Coastal Carolina University Police Department, Chris Dennis of the Horry County Sheriff's Office and Officer David Belue of the Myrtle Beach Police Department. The three are assigned to the 15th Judicial Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit.

SLED conducts law enforcement officer-involved shootings at the request of the agency involved in the incident. This independent investigation follows SLED's guidance in conducting interviews along with the gathering and analysis of forensic evidence. Interviews will be conducted with the officers. There is no body cam or dash cam video of the incident.

Information gathered in the investigation will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors for review and determination of what, if any, criminal charges that may be filed.

This is an ongoing investigation. No other information about the case will be disclosed at this time by SLED. SLED will defer to local authorities for further information regarding the officers involved, including administrative status and employment history.

Thursday's incident is the 14th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2015 and the first this year by a 15th Judicial Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit officer. In 2014, there were 42 officer-involved shooting incidents in South Carolina, none involved a 15th Judicial Circuit DEU Officer.
