Former police officer pleads guilty to attempted murder charges

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Former Leland police officer pleaded guilty to attempted murder Wednesday. 

Howard “Hank” Smith entered a guilty plea to two counts of attempted murder -- one for an SC State Trooper and one for a Brunswick County Sheriff's Deputy, during an initial car in chase, said Assistant Solicitor Stephen Grooms with the Horry County Solicitor's Office.

Grooms said Smith shot at the Brunswick County deputy's car as the chase went through Little River, SC.

Former Leland police officer pleads not guilty on attempted murder charges

Smith was sentenced to 20 years for each attempted murder charge, sentencing will run concurrent.

After the SC Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, troopers chased Smith towards Highway 31 and Highway 22. It was in that area, Smith shot at a SCHWP trooper, said Grooms.

The other three charges against Smith were dropped as a result of the plea.

Grooms said he was told by Smith's attorney there are still charges pending in Brunswick County.
