TABOR CITY, NC (WECT) -

As police continue investigating alleged sex crimes at Tabor City Middle School, a campus custodian charged with statutory rape of a student appeared before a Columbus County judge Monday.

Authorities arrested Derrick Hemmingway, 41, Friday night and charged with him four counts of felony statutory rape or sexual offense.

The Tabor City man allegedly had sexual relations with a 14-year-old male student four times between January and June of 2014, according to Capt. Russell Conway.

The acts reportedly occurred in a custodial room at Tabor City Middle School, Conway said. According to Lt. Greg Sibbett, the victim was supposed to be helping Hemmingway with janitorial tasks when the alleged crimes occurred during the school day.

Police were notified of the alleged crimes and launched their investigation Monday. Hemmingway may face additional charges, according to Lt. Greg Sibbett.

"There could be other victims," Sibbett explained.

Judge Scott Ussery raised Hemmingway's secured bond to $200,000 during a first appearance Monday. As a condition of his bond, Hemmingway was ordered not to have any contact with the victim, who is now 15.

Ussery appointed Whiteville attorney William C. Gore to represented Hemmingway. His next court date is March 12.

Hemmingway has been employed with Columbus County Schools since August 2003, according to district spokesman Kelly Jones. School officials placed Hemmingway on unpaid suspension.
