HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Fire Rescue responded to a sawdust hopper fire in Conway, early Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to New South Lumber Company at around 4:30 a.m., and spent about two hours at the scene, according to Brian VanAernem with HCFR.

New South is a big lumber yard. VanAernem reported that there is a large collection of bags of sawdust, and the sawdust is extremely flammable.

VanAernem said it takes so long when there is a fire at the lumber yard because firefighters have to remove bags of sawdust to make sure the fire doesn't extend. Conway City Fire assisted HCFR in battling the blaze and no one was hurt.

In December, a similar incident occurred at New South. VanAernem said it's rare for these fires to happen so close together but these kinds of fires are fairly common because the sawdust is flammable.
