Conway leaders vote to approve smoking ban on city public property

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Conway city leaders voted to approve a ban on smoking in parks, buildings, vehicles and events on city public property and city-sponsored events.

"I think it is a progressive move and even in its limited form, it's a progressive step. If we take it step-by-step maybe, we'll end up with a workplace ordinance, or just perhaps as a couple of council members noted that the merchants and the property owners would do it on their own. That's what you hope people will realize -- the importance of their employees and make those decisions," said Mayor Alys Lawson.

The second and final reading will be held in two weeks.

The original ordinance, which was a workplace ban was tabled in the last meeting and then put in workshop.

Monday, Councilman Larry White made a motion to accept the original ordinance, but it failed due to not receiving a second to his motion.
