MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk continues to earn accolades with its selection to win the South Carolina Governor's Cup award at the Tourism and Travel Conference Wednesday.

The Governor's Cup goes to the state's top tourism industry while highlighting their outstanding achievements in the tourism market. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk received the award at the 2015 Governor's Conference on Tourism and Travel.

“The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is the centerpiece of our tourism, and its positive effect on the city and the entire Grand Strand cannot be overstated,” President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Brad Dean said. “In its first five years, the boardwalk has had a substantial impact on the entire downtown area, making it a go-to destination for both visitors to the Myrtle Beach area and local residents who want to be a part of the fun and excitement.”

Construction on the boardwalk was completed in May 2010 and was expanded in 2013. The boardwalk stretches from 15th Avenue North pier to First Avenue North pier, while featuring the popular Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, restaurants, and accommodations.

The boardwalk is home to festival and events such as a St. Patrick's Day celebration, Hot Summer Nights, Halloween Friday Nights, and Holidays.

“The downtown area is thriving, as the many great amenities found along the boardwalk attract more and more visitors,” Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes said. “We are so thankful for this recognition, and share it with the many merchants, community leaders and other stakeholders who made this boardwalk a reality. “

Last year, Myrtle Beach Boardwalk was placed at number three on the National Geographic's Top 10 U.S. Boardwalks.

Several people who live on the side streets of Ocean Blvd. in North Myrtle Beach recently received a letter saying they need to get rid of obstructions in front of their homes. The city says that’s because the space could be used for public parking. Around 30 people came out to the city council meeting on Monday to speak out about the issue.
