HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – After withdrawing a previous request for rezoning that would have allowed big box stores to set up near the neighborhoods around the Wicked Stick golf course, a new proposal received initial approval by the county planning commission this week that will instead bring additional single-family homes to the area.
The proposal to rezone 38 acres of the course to SF7, which would allow for 90 residential properties, must still pass three more readings before approved.
Last month, residents in the area spoke out against the developer's plans to rezone the land for commercial properties, fearing that big box stores and 24/7 operations would disturb their neighborhoods. To the surprise of many residents, the ordinance was quickly withdrawn.
A first reading for the new proposal before the Horry County Council will be held on March 3.
