LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) - Florence County School District Three's next superintendent is looking forward to continuing her career in the district she calls home.
Laura Hickson is currently assistant superintendent in Florence County School District Three, but soon she will be superintendent.
School board members decided to conduct the search for superintendent themselves to save the district money. The board received applications from more than 20 applicants in about seven different states, said Dr. Lane Floyd, chairman of the FCSD3 school board. After interviewing three of the candidates, board members ultimately chose Hickson.
Dr. Floyd said it usually takes three years for a superintendent from out of the area to fully understand the needs of a school district, but Hickson is already well-acquainted with how the district functions.
"It will be a seamless transition between Dr. Callicutt and Mrs. Hixon," Dr. Floyd said. "We can pick up and move forward very quickly."
Hickson has spent most of her career in FCSD3 in various positions including teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of Title I and assistant superintendent.
"I've worked with the community, the parents, the students, so I think all of that compiled together has supported my qualifications," she said.
Hickson signed a three year contract with the school district for $130,000 a year. She'll take over the superintendent position after Dr. V. Keith Callicutt retires June 30.
