HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The St. James Middle school has been awarded a $5,000 grant to improve the exterior of the school grounds.
Teacher Crystal Reissman applied for the Lowe's Toolbox Grant. She said SJMS is a first-time recipient of the grant.
"Over the summer, I was researching different grants that would benefit our school and I came across Lowe's Toolbox Grant. I thought to myself, 'We've got nothing to lose,' she said.
Reissman said she applied for the grant and several months later, "I was blessed to hear a positive response back from them!"
The thousands of dollars will be used for landscaping around the middle school.
"We have a vision to create a beautifully landscaped entrance way for our school where everyone feels welcomed," Reismann said. "Our school does so many great things and our outside should reflect what's going on in the inside!"
St. James Middle will be preparing soil, installing plants, trees, and flowers and other features such as benches and bird feeders.
"This will help parents, students, and other visitors feel welcome in our school, get involved in our school, and have a view of the outside that matches all of the wonderful things occurring in the school! It will improve our sense of culture from the moment you enter our grounds!" she added.
SJMS was was awarded the grant January 9. Plans to begin the project will be near the end of March.
