FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Country music and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs and his band, Kentucky Thunder, will headline the inaugural 2015 Florence Bluegrass Summit in Florence. The star-studded event is scheduled March 7 at the Florence Civic Center.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a regional bluegrass act will start the festivities at 5:40 p.m. Tickets go on sale beginning Friday, January 30 at 10 a.m. and are available at the Florence Civic Center Box Office, Ticketmaster.com, or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In addition, Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, bluegrass/gospel family group The Whites, the youthful new grass group The Barefoot Movement, and a “to be announced” regional act are expected to perform.

We intend for the Florence Bluegrass Summit to be the first of many such events,” said show affiliate Bud Schaetzle, “Bluegrass, Americana and Gospel music have a legion of fans throughout the Pee Dee and greater South Carolina. This is just the first step in a bigger plan to establish Florence as a regular stop for both nationally recognized artists as well as the rising stars in these genres.”

The following information was issued by the SMG Florence Civic Center:

Returning to Florence after a very successful concert appearance here in 2014, Ricky Skaggs has long been a leader and innovator in the Bluegrass and Country Music genres. This 14-time Grammy winner is one of the most sought after and popular live performers in the genre and was the Civic Center's first choice to kick off the inaugural Florence Bluegrass Summit.

“We wanted this first Florence Bluegrass Summit to have an inspired grouping of artists, and the truth is that the inspiration was Ricky Skaggs,” said show affiliate Jo Hunt, “For this landmark event, Skaggs opening acts include legend Dr. Ralph Stanley, who gave Ricky his first touring job in bluegrass, and The Whites, who are all family to Skaggs including his wife, celebrated vocalist, Sharon White. Skaggs and White just recently released an album of duets (Hearts Like Ours) and we expect that Skaggs, Dr. Stanley and The Whites will all be sharing the stage at different moments during the evening.”
