JOHNSONVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Johnsonville Police Department responded to the Kangaroo Express on Saturday in reference to two people attempting to make a purchase with counterfeit money.

Gertrude Nesmith, 60, and her grandson, Tyreek Lewis, 18, went to the store with $195 in counterfeit money. Nesmith attempted to buy a money order with nine 20 dollar bills and three five dollar bills.

According to Johnsonville PD Chief, Ron Douglas, the clerk knew the bills were fake and called police. Nesmith and Lewis remained in the store until law enforcement arrived.

Chief Douglas said while interviewing the two suspects, they acted like they did not know the money was fake. Nesmith and Lewis were arrested and charged with forgery.
