Students injured in school bus accident near Coward

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Florence School District 3 bus was rear-ended by a passenger van Friday morning near Coward; over 20 students were taken to the local hospital, according to district Communications Coordinator Brian Huckabee.

The bus was rear-ended sometime between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Highway 52, Huckabee said. The bus was carrying 47 students and the driver, and 22 students were transported to the hospital. However, there did not appear to be any serious injuries, as all the students were able to walk off the bus.

The remaining students were put on a different bus and taken to school, where they will be checked out by the school nurse, Huckabee said.

The driver of the van was also taken to a local hospital.

The bus contained students from three schools: Lake City High School, J. Paul Truluck Intermediate School, and Ronald E. McNair Junior High School.

The South Lynches Fire Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers responded to the accident. No charges will be filed for this incident, SCHP Corporal Sonny Collins confirmed.
