Marion County school board member resigns citing residency controversy

MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Marion County school district board member has resigned citing a controversy regarding his residency in District Seven.

Shawn Johnson submitted his “irrevocable resignation” Wednesday to the district, dated January 15, stating the resignation would be effective May 30, 2015.

In his letter, Johnson states it is his "understanding that there has been a question regarding [his] residency in District Seven."

He continues by saying, "While I believe that my residency complies with South Carolina law, I do not wish to contribute to a controversy associated with the Board that could take away from the Board's focus on serving the children of Marion County."

According to county officials, Johnson was elected April 2012 to serve the Marion County Board of Education.
