MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - A group has formed to campaign for increased millage rates to pay for emergency services for the Murrells Inlet-Garden City fire district.
Friends of Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue led by "a county councilman and Republican Party leader formed Thursday to advocate a 'yes' vote in the March 17 referendum," according to its website.
The referendum will decide whether the current 10 mill property tax cap of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City fire district will be raised to 14 mills "to provide additional fire protection and build a fourth station," according to the group.
In December, the fire district approved a $177,000 budget deficit.
Chairman Al Hitchcock cited an approved referendum as one of three potential budget balancers.
