BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A suspect has been arrested and charged after shooting a 27-year-old man inside a home in Bennettsville on January 13.
DeAundre Malachi, 19, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime following a shooting inside a Hamlet Highway residence.
A bullet entered the window of the home just before 7:30 p.m., hitting the man in his back, said Lt. Larry Turner with the Bennettsville Police Department. The man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be okay, Turner said.
Several people were inside the home, including a small child, when the gun fired through the front window, Turner said. The people have been questioned by police.
No motive has been determined by the department.
Turner described the residential section of Hamlet Highway as a "quiet neighborhood."
"In the 18 years I've been here, [I've] never known of a shooting," Turner said.
Malachi called police and surrendered on Salem Road in Marlboro County, Turner said. He has also been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime for a shooting at a Bennettsville dance, Sunday morning.
According to Turner, Malachi will go before a general sessions judge. Turner anticipates the hearing happening next week. Malachi is currently being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center. Lt. Turner believes Malachi will be transported to Dillon County for the hearing.
The investigations remain ongoing, although Malachi is the main suspect in the cases.
