Police: School janitor exposes himself to child at Horry County school

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A school employee was arrested after police say he exposed himself to a child at Waterway Elementary.

Darrell Lee Rice, 57, of Little River, has been charged with indecent exposure, according to Lt. Raul Denis with the Horry County Police Department. Rice was identified as a janitor at the school, according to the police report.

The Horry County School Board voted to terminate Rice as an employee of the district at a meeting Monday evening.

Denis said officers were called to the school Friday, January 9 where it was reported that Rice exposed himself to a 6-year-old child.

The investigation revealed the act was caught on the school's surveillance system, according to the department.

"[The complainant] noticed [Rice] was seen with what appeared to be his [privates] exposed and partially inside a trash can he placed in front of him," the report states. "[Rice] can be seen taking his right hand and touching his [privates] before he steps back inside the doorway of the classroom...Where he was standing, faced two occupied classrooms during regular school hours," according to the report.

The investigation remains open.

Rice was first employed with Horry County Schools on December 7, 2012, Harding confirmed. He served in the same janitorial position at Carolina Forest Elementary before transferring to Waterway Elementary.

Rice transferred to Waterway Elementary on November 3, 2014, Harding said.

Over the weekend, district officials were made aware of the allegations and worked on the investigation, Harding confirmed.

Rice was taken to J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
