FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Two suspects have been taken into custody after an armed robbery at a store on North Jones Road in Olanta Thursday morning, according to Major Michael Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
The suspects were identified as 20-year-old Malcolm Devon Spates, and 31-year-old James Chester Singletary, both of Olanta.
Spates and Singletary walked into the store and held up the clerk at gunpoint while wearing masks, Major Nunn stated. They got away with an undetermined amount of cash, and following the robbery, they took off on foot.
The Florence County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of Olanta Police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, used dogs to aid in the search, which led to the arrest of one of the suspects, Major Nunn added. The other was taken into custody a short time later.
Both suspects were taken to the Florence County Detention Center, and have been charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent felony.
"We could not be more proud of our Deputies, including our nationally recognized canine tracking teams for quickly apprehending these suspects and recovering the victim's money," Sheriff Kenney Boone stated. "These officers demonstrate daily their selfless dedication to duty and the protection of the citizens of Florence County. We commend them for their splendid work."
