DSS reminds parents: don't sleep with your infant in cold weather

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – With extreme cold temperatures expected overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning, the state Department of Social Services has an important reminder for parents: resist the temptation to sleep with your baby.

According to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed is the leading cause of death in children 1 and younger, claiming the lives of 199 infants between 2007 and 2013.

DSS is reminding parents of the ABC's of Safe Sleep: Leave Your Baby Alone on their Back in their Crib.

Parents, siblings and pets can roll onto babies during sleep, and infants can get tangled in sheets or blankets.
