Pee Dee warming shelters open

PEE DEE, SC (WMBF) - Warming shelters are scheduled to open in Marion County as temperatures are expected to plummet at sunset Wednesday.

The Marion City Fire Department, located at 107 East Broad Street, will open its shelter at 4 p.m., according to officials.

The Mullins City Fire Department is scheduled to open its warming shelter opening at 5 p.m. The fire department is located at 161 North East Front Street.

Red Cross is providing both shelters with cots and blankets, said Lou Palm, Disaster Program Manager of the Eastern South Carolina Chapter of the Palmetto Region of the Red Cross.

The Salvation Army in Florence says it will open a warming station on Hoffmeyer Road in Florence at 5 p.m.

    Traffic congestion is being reported on several spots along Highway 17 and Highway 17 Bypass from Surfside Beach to Georgetown as the total solar eclipse draws nearer. An alert from the South Carolina Department of Transportation states that US 17 southbound between the Garden City Connector and Indigo Club Drive is down to an average speed of just 7 miles per hour, for a length of about 9 miles.
