Driver ticketed in fatal motorcycle crash

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – An off-duty Horry County firefighter died after a motorcycle accident on Enoch Road Tuesday afternoon, officials confirmed.

Furman Hanna, 31, of Aynor, died due to a blunt force internal injury, according to Coroner Tony Hendrick. Hanna was known by many as "Mitch."

January 6, at about 12:15 p.m., a 63-year-old man driving a 2009 Chevrolet HHR north on Enoch Road attempted to make a left turn onto a private driveway. He turned in front of a southbound 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle, according to Corporal Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The vehicles collided.

Collins said the other driver in the accident was charged with failure to yield. The driver received a ticket and was given a court date.

The operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries, officials confirmed.

"Today we lost a Firefighter in an Off Duty vehicle accident. He was fatally injured while operating his motorcycle on Enoch Rd. ?He was a senior Firefighter with our Department for over nine years," stated Horry County Fire Rescue official Brian VanAernem. "Please Keep your thought with his family and ours."

The crash remains under investigation by SCHP, Cpl. Collins stated.
