Red Springs brings in new interim fire chief

John Ammons is the new interim fire chief for Red Springs Fire Department, after the majority of fire fighters voted on Monday. John Ammons is the new interim fire chief for Red Springs Fire Department, after the majority of fire fighters voted on Monday.

RED SPRINGS, NC (WMBF) - John Ammons is the new interim fire chief for Red Springs Fire Department, after the majority of fire fighters voted on Monday.

The mayor, town manager and two town commissioners met with the fire department to bring Ammons in. According to Red Springs Mayor, John McNeill, Ammons had to meet with 25 members of the fire department, who then took a vote to pledge their support to name Ammons as the new interim fire chief. 24 of the 25 members voted in his favor.

Ammons was previously the fire chief of Shannon Fire Department. Years ago, he was an officer with the Red Springs Fire Department. Ammons is earning $50 per month, he is working on a volunteer basis, according to the mayor. 

The former chief and assistant chief are still not with the department after a dispute over policy changes.
