Memorial held for fallen Myrtle Beach police officer

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A memorial service was held to honor fallen Myrtle Beach Police Officer Joe McGarry on Monday.

The ceremony was held at the memorial fountain next to the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center.

McGarry was killed in 2002 while he was questioning a suspect. There was a struggle between the two and McGarry was shot in the face.

Luzenski Cottrell, the man convicted of murdering McGarry, was retried in September.

During the trial, a fellow officer with McGarry when he was killed testified.

Cottrell was found guilty of murder sentenced to death.

A preliminary date for Cottrell's execution was set - but because he appealed. It has been pushed back indefinitely.

Horry County Solicitor said it could be years before Cottrell is put to death.
