SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A Surfside Beach man was arrested after vehicles in the area of 3rd Avenue South were broken into.

On December 26, SBPD officers on patrol observed suspicious activity in the area. Dispatch also received a call about a subject breaking into vehicles in the area. According to a press release from the SBPD, the caller said the suspect fled on a bicycle. The caller was able to give a complete clothing and suspect description.

Officers were able to positively identify Joseph George Downey III, 33, of Surfside Beach as the burglary suspect. “This is another prime example of citizens and law enforcement working together,” said SBPD Chief Rodney Keziah. “Officers being observant while on patrol and citizens providing good clothing and suspect descriptions helped make the arrest in this case,” he added.

According to the SBPD, Downey was charged with breaking and entering auto, possession of master keys, possession of burglary tools, malicious injury to personal property, and receiving stolen goods. Downey was also wanted out of Myrtle Beach for burglary charges, according to the SBPD.

Downey was taken into custody and is being detained at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on an $11,700 bond.
