Suspect charged after setting Conway church on fire

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Providence Church on Highway 501 East caught fire Wednesday night.

Horry County Police Department responded to the suspicious fire and burglary. According to a news release from HCPD, there was evidence that the fire was set intentionally. The suspect allegedly took electronic equipment from the church before the fire.

Bobby Barfield was detained at J. Reuben Long Detention Center and is charged with arson, burglary and grand larceny, according to police.

Detective Bobby Smith and Fire investigators located the suspect and recovered the property.

One lane of Highway 501 was closed due to the fire. Fire crews were still on the scene at 10 p.m.
