Darlington Police issue 10-year crime stats

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - Car break-ins remain the biggest crime problem in Darlington, according to the Darlington Police Department.

The department issued a breakdown of reported crimes in 2004, 2009 and 2014. Over the last ten years, the department issued a statistical comparison of the following reported crimes: burglary, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, breaking into motor vehicle, murder and arson.

The following information was posted to the Darlington Police Department Facebook page:

Statistical comparison:

The department said burglary is down 162 percent over the last 5 years and down 218 percent over the last 10 years.

Reported crimes of rape is up 25 percent over the last 5 years and down 75 percent over the last 10 years, according to the DPD.

Officials said robbery is down 87.5 percent over the last 5 years and down 150 percent over the last 10 years.

Reports of aggravated assault is down 78 percent over the last 5 years and 96 percent over the last ten years.

The department reports motor vehicle theft is down 100 percent over the last 5 years and 277 percent over the last 10 years.

Car break-ins are reportedly up 33 percent over the last 5 years and up 28 percent over the last 10 years.

The department said murder is up 100 percent over the last 5 years and has 0 percent change over the last 10 years.

Reported crimes of arson are up 200 percent over the last 5 years and has 0 percent change over the last 10 years.

The department issued the following note:

*Note when you are dealing with very small numbers such as less than 10 it would appear that there is a very dramatic change when in fact there really isn't that significant of a difference.

The biggest crime problem that we have continues to be car break-ins we are diligently try to get this under control.
