Number one title draws national spotlight to CCU

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina University football team's first number one ranking has the college looking toward an even stronger future.

“What our football program, Coach Moglia and his staff have accomplished is a tremendous achievement for the university,” said Matt Hogue, interim athletic director for CCU.

The FCS coaches poll chose CCU as the top football team in the country right now.

“It's pretty good to be number one, obviously I've never been a part of a team like this, but it's something special that we got going on,” said Joe Koleta, offensive lineman for the team.

National attention is something the athletics department has always been striving for since the football team was formed 12 years ago.

“We invite ESPN at any time to show up for College Gameday,” Hogue said. “Of course it doesn't happen very often at the FCS level, but once you reach number one, you start to get into those conversations.”

The undefeated team has been getting record-breaking attendance at games so far this season with a 20% increase in ticket sales compared to 2013.

The South Carolina State game on September 13 had 10,124 people. The game against Charleston Southern broke that by 70 people.

CCU is playing Monmouth on Saturday at 3 p.m. then Liberty the following Saturday at 1 p.m. Those games will determine positioning for playoffs and the Big South Championship. Be purchased online or at the ticket office in Arcadia Hall.

“You've got the number one team in your backyard,” Hogue said. “We'd love to see you here the next two weeks to show what that means to this area.”

The sky is not the only thing that could blackout during the eclipse. Cell providers are reporting that a connection jam is possible during Monday’s event. The eclipse itself will not affect cell service, but tech experts explain thousands of people attempting to share their excitement online could severely degrade your cell phone connection.
