City hopes to bring more movie 'Magic' to Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A multi- million dollar film is shooting its sequel right here in Myrtle Beach: Magic Mike XXL. While the details are being kept under wraps, new behind-the-scenes information was discussed during Tuesday's City Council workshop.

Scenes in the movie Magic Mike XXL will include shots from Plyler Park, Ocean Boulevard and the Skywheel.

During the workshop, a representative for Warner Brothers asked for a special event permit to use the downtown area for filming. He told council members the film will have many of the same actors, including Channing Tatum. Matthew McConaughey will not be in the sequel, but Will Smith will join the crew.

The rep mentioned the scenes shot in Myrtle Beach will be part of a road trip in the movie, where the characters travel from Tampa to Myrtle Beach and will be shot in the beginning of November.

Council members hope the audience will also take road trips here because of the exposure the film will give the Grand Strand. They took the time during the workshop to question the rep on the best way to get crews to film in Myrtle Beach.

“A lot of studios are moving out of North Carolina. And to have the guy here from Warner Brothers was great to ask him what kind of incentives we could come up with, on the city level, to bring more of it here,” shared Randall Wallace, a Myrtle Beach City Councilman.

The rep's advice was to look at taxes and infrastructure. He mentioned more production companies would be interested if there was already a support staff in place. It would make it easier and cheaper for them to film a movie.

Already, the City of Myrtle Beach is working to make it easier for crews to film in the area.

"I just can't help but think this would help get the Myrtle Beach name out there and make us a bigger player in the resort and tourism world," expressed Wallace.

The amendment to a current ordinance would make filming permits similar to a facility permit, which allows a group to use a park or recreation facility. The city has plans to look through the proposed amendment during the next city council meeting.
