CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - As expected, things have been going well for Coastal Carolina this year. Complete with a 5-0 record and ranking of third in the country, the Chants have cruised in their last three games. While the defense is largely to thank for that, that unit won't take all the credit.
"Credit to our coaches," said Quinn Backus. "They do a great job scouting our opponents, putting in the right plays, and maximizing our talents and we're just going out and executing each week. So it's worked out these last three weeks pretty good."
Pretty good may be an understatement. Coastal has only allowed three points to its opponents each of the last three games, and is only allowing an average of 11 points each outing for the season.
"Coming out of preseason, I thought our defense was already better than it was a year ago," said head coach Joe Moglia. "I think that has been the case."
But the work during the preseason also carried over off the field, which has helped turn these results.
"I think the players have taken more responsibility," said Backus. "The players see a problem, they take it upon themselves to handle it rather than going to the coaches. The main goal, during practice, or during a game is starting to take care of itself."
The defense gets another shot to improve itself this weekend, traveling up to Furman.
