DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Timmonsville man was arrested after driving away and hitting a trooper during a sobriety checkpoint in Darlington County.

Robert Benson, 44, has been charged with first degree assault and battery, DUI, driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd.

The incident happened Sunday night at the intersection of Ebenezer Road and Turnpike Road.

Troopers were conducting a checkpoint when Benson pulled up.

Authorities said Benson smelled of alcohol and they asked him to put the car in park and step out, according to Byrd.

Instead, Benson put the car in drive and took off, hitting a trooper, officials said.

Benson was caught after his car collided with a cruiser and he drove into a field.

Benson was taken to the Darlington County Detention Center.
