Twenty-five years ago, Hugo slammed the Carolina coast killing many people and devastating the region. At that time it was the most damaging hurricane ever recorded.
Local emergency preparedness officials often say it's not if it will happen, but when. With the construction and population growth in our area since 1989, a storm like Hugo would most likely mean even more devastation for the region. That's why it is so important that you have a plan to prepare your home and evacuate if a similar storm approaches.
Hopefully officials are wrong and this area won't be hit with another major storm. All of us still need a plan of action and can just consider ourselves lucky if we never have to follow it.
