Deputy struggles with, arrests Mullins man caught littering

MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Marion County Sheriff's deputy chased and struggled with a suspect after the deputy saw the man throwing a trash bag in the street; the suspect was arrested and the officer found several bags of marijuana on him.

At about 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the deputy observed a guy throwing the trash in the road in the Rains area of Marion County, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. When the deputy turned the blue lights on and pulled his patrol vehicle behind the suspect, he took off running.

After a chase and extensive struggle with the officer, the suspect tried to hide under a house. The deputy approached, and the suspect advanced towards him in a threatening manner. The deputy discharged a shot into the ground, and handcuffed the suspect.

No one was injured, but the officer was struck in the face three times during the struggle. The officer found several bags of marijuana and a set of scales on the suspect.

Mullins resident Aaron Dawkins, 32, also known as "ARock," was arrested and charged with littering, assault on a law enforcement officer while resisting arrest, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Dawkins has a prior arrest and charges of burglary, assault and battery, public disorderly conduct, simple possession of marijuana, and transporting alcohol in a motor vehicle with a broken seal.
