SCHP: Other driver at fault in officer-involved accident in North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – An Horry County Police vehicle was involved in a traffic accident with injuries in North Myrtle Beach Tuesday morning.

One person, who was in the other vehicle, was transported to the hospital with injuries, according to North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling.

The accident occurred at about 7:40 a.m. in the 1300 block of South U.S. 17, near the Krispy Kreme in North Myrtle Beach, according to information from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Both lanes of southbound Highway 17 were closed, and one northbound lane was open Tuesday morning, according to Dowling. Authorities had to wait for SCHP to arrive on scene to determine what happened, which is required whenever there is an officer-involved accident, Dowling said.

The Horry County Police officer was determined not to be at fault, according to Captain Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the other vehicle was at fault, and will be charged with failure to yield to right of way.

A viewer sent video showing a damaged HCPD vehicle and a damaged SUV in the roadway.
