Plans in full swing for Myrtle Beach summit to discuss Bikefest solutions

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Law enforcement agencies from five states and the nation's capital have registered to attend the Myrtle Beach Special Events Summit. The event will be held by the Myrtle Beach police department in an effort to maintain control in "urban gatherings."

From Florida, Miami Beach and Daytona Beach police departments will give presentations at the summit. Officials from Virginia Beach, VA; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC; and Atlanta, GA are scheduled to attend. In addition, the Galveston and Austin police departments from Texas are also scheduled to attend.

Panelists from the various departments will "discuss best practices, lessons learned, and innovative ideas as it relates to urban events and safety."

Gov. Nikki Haley is scheduled to speak at the event on Monday, September 22.

The three-day event is scheduled Sunday, September 21 through Tuesday, September 23. The presentations and roundtable discussions will take place at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The summit comes after Myrtle Beach experienced the most violent weekend in at least four decades with multiple shootings over one weekend killing three people, and injuring others as the Atlantic Beach Bike Rally was in full force.
