SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) -  The Second Annual Surf Off competition took place in Surfside Beach Saturday.

Two west coast founded companies, Nixon and Dragon Alliance came to our local coast where nearly 100 surfers competed for big prizes and national recognition.

These two sponsors found our area appealing because of the recent interest people were having in our surfing community.

"There's a lot of good talent from the smallest to the oldest," explained Jacob Simmons, owner of Eternal Waves Surf Shop.

The Second Annual Surf Off teamed up with Eastern Surfing Association who is the largest amateur surfing association in the world.

That's makes this surf off a destination for beginner surfers who want to move their way up to larger competitions.

"If you can surf out here you can surf anything," said Shawn Clark, owner of H20 Adventure Tours.

Although the swells aren't too consistent because of the grand strand's location, it allows surfers to get more comfortable in the water.

"It's grown a lot just from those teenagers kind of showing the little kids which route to go and these little kids are like.. oh that's their idol. so they just kind of chase after it," Simmons said.

Surf lessons have nearly doubled for Eternal Waves Surf Shop, especially with kids.

Saturday's event was the last local ESA competition before some of these surfers head off to the North East Regional Championships in Nags Head, NC.
