MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - For months, we've known a grocery store is going to anchor the new Farrow Commons shopping center off Fred Nash Boulevard near the Backgate. However, few details were released about exactly which store until Thursday.
BI-LO told WMBF News it is opening a new store at that location. Not only does that mean a place for you to shop, but it also means 100 new jobs for our area.
Right now, you can see exactly where that BI-LO will be just on the northeast corner of the Backgate intersection. Crews have cleared several acres of land between the Bypass, Farrow Parkway, and Fred Nash Boulevard.
That will be the new site of the planned Farrow Commons. Similar to Market Common, this new development will be home to the BI-LO, bank, other stores.
Some people who live and work in the area say Farrow Commons is needed to keep up with growth, but others say between the Market Common and what's on Highway 707 in Socastee, you have enough places to go for what you need.
"It'll be slightly more convenient, but I personally don't see the great need for it but you're going to have progress and we have to live with that," said Steve Urban who lives off Farrow Parkway.
Another concern is traffic with more people heading to the planned shopping center. The city engineer told WMBF News that at the moment there are no plans to widen Fred Nash Boulevard or make any changes to where Fred Nash meets Farrow Parkway to accommodate traffic.
BI-LO told WMBF News the new store could open as early as next fall. The developers for Farrow Commons told reporter Brennan Somers that construction on the new buildings could start as early as Spring 2015 if all goes as planned.
