NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department is accepting applications for the 2014 Citizens Police Academy.
The free academy begins in October and the application deadline is September 29. Graduations from the Police Academy will be held on November 3.
The nine-week class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Citizens will learn about the history of the city's public safety department, traffic investigation, fire prevention and tactical rescue. Instructors will also focus on marine patrol, crime scene investigation, and crime prevention.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Applicants must be 21 years old.
• Applicants must complete a personal history form.
• Applicants must undergo a background investigation and criminal history check.
• Applicants must attend at least seven of the nine meetings in order to graduate.
Founded in 2012, the North Myrtle Beach Citizens Police Academy provides participants with a deeper understanding of what law enforcement officers do and the decisions they must make each day. This program is not designed to create police officers.
