HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Business is booming for AC Unit repair companies around the Grand Strand.
The sweltering temperatures we're dealing with are overworking ACs.
One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning company is repairing or checking up on more than 50 AC units a day.
Owner Richard Drew of One Hour Heating and Air conditioning said, "Typically they're break down calls where, you know people neglected to change their air filter, see a lot of compactors, we see a lot of fan motors, refrigerant leaks."
This is what happens when you don't keep tabs on your AC. Drew explains, "if you can imagine you running down the street trying to breathe through a straw that's what the unit is doing when it has a blocked filter, it can't breathe."
Homeowners, you can do some of the leg work by yourself to avoid the expense of a professional. The number one thing you can do as a homeowner is make sure you check your air filter and check it often. To make sure it's not full of dirt or pet dander.
To make sure your AC unit is entirely up to par, experts suggest having a professional come by twice a year to make sure both your heating and cooling units are fully functioning.
That maintenance will run you about 70 dollars, a low cost compared to a major repair that could cost you thousands.
To avoid running your AC all day long, set your to thermostat around 78 degrees when you're not home. This prevents overworking your unit later on when you want to cool your home down. If you are having issues with your unit right now, call a professional and head somewhere cool while they fix the problem.
The biggest piece of advice is to keep up with regular maintenance to avoid a day with no AC.
