MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are headed to the postseason after earning a walkoff win on the final day of the regular season thanks to Luis Mendez's single in the bottom of the ninth against Lynchburg on Monday.
With a Salem Red Sox loss earlier in the day, the Pelicans won the South Division second half title from the Carolina League. It is the first time the team has won both the first and second half titles since 2008.
With the win, the Pelicans earn homefield advantage throughout the first round of the Carolina League Playoffs. The Pelicans will play the Red Sox in a best two-out-of-three series that begins on Wednesday at 7:05. All games will be at Ticketreturn.com Field. Game two is Thursday, and game three will be Friday (if necessary).
Should the Pelicans win the series, they would be home for the first two games of the Carolina League Championship series on Saturday and Sunday.
