FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A student killed in the tragic high school shooting in Columbine, Colorado is making a difference in the lives of some students in Florence.

Students at Florence District One middle and high schools are being introduced to a "special program designed to create a special culture to ensure student safety," according to a news release issued by the district.

The program, Rachel's Challenge, will be introduced to students at Wilson High School on Friday, August 29.

The program includes a series of student empowering, educator motivating programs and strategies called the Awaken the Learner: Five-step School Improvement Process.

With the program, students and adults are motivated to create and sustain safe, caring and supportive learning environments essential for academic achievement.

The programs are based on the writings and life of 17-year-old Rachel Scott who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999.
