Hopkinsville preparing for eclipse in 2017

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINSVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

Hopkinsville, Kentucky is preparing for a daytime event that will leave the community in the dark.

M.B. Roland Distillery in Christian County is just one of the businesses already preparing and planning for an event that hasn't happened since 1918, a total solar eclipse.

For Paul Tomaszewski, owner of M.B. Roland Distillery, you can't rush Kentucky Bourbon.

He's used to waiting but soon Paul and the rest of the world won't have to wait any longer for an event that's 96 years in the making.

Paul says, "but apparently it's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see in your life."

On August 21st, 2017, right around 1:30 in the afternoon Hopkinsville, Kentucky will go black for around 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Paul says, "I would say to Google it but you can't take a picture that shows it."

The moon will pass directly in front of the sun creating a shadow on Earth and Hopkinsville will have one of the best vantage points for this phenomenon in the entire world.

Paul says, "realized what a big deal this is."

Hopkinsville city leaders and businesses are already preparing for what could be 100,000 people from all over the world descending upon their backyard.

Paul says, "it's our opportunity to show what we have to the world."

Plans are in place to coordinate street lights and law enforcement are working on plans for crowd control.

Paul says he's ready for the masses.

Paul says, "because we are going to have an international showing coming from Europe, Asia, all over the place."

He just hopes they don't spill their bourbon when the lights go out.
