South strand medical offices host free sports injury clinics for students

GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) - Georgetown Hospital System and Waccamaw Orthopaedics will offer free sports injury clinics for student athletes this fall, according to a news release issued by GHS.

The free clinics will begin August 23 and continue every Saturday morning through November 1.

The clinics will take place from 8-10 a.m. at Waccamaw Orthopaedics, located at 4040 Highway 17 Bypass, Suite 101, in Murrells Inlet, and at NextStep's Georgetown Outpatient Therapy Center, located at 219 Church St. in Georgetown.

The events will be staffed by orthopedic specialists. Dr. William Greer, a board-certified orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, Dr. Gavin Vaughn, a board-certified sports medicine physician, and Shantae Siefert, a certified physician assistant, will staff the free clinics, which are open to all area student athletes.

Dr. Greer said the clinics have been born out of a necessity to see injured students on a day when parents don't have to take off work and children won't miss school. "A lot of events in school culminate at the end of the week, so when we hold our clinic on the weekend, there's not a lag time between the student having an injury and being seen the following week. We can institute treatment quicker and not wait, and ultimately, the goal is to have a safe return to what they want to do."
