HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - County leaders voted to write off more than $5 million worth of EMS rendered before July 1, 2011 at a meeting Tuesday.
A total of $5.1 million was owed from 8,393 patients who received emergency medical services, according to the county.
More than $3.4 million was owed from residents of Horry County, while $1.6 million accumulated from out-of-the-county residents. More than $50,000 was owed from people who gave the county incorrect address information.
It's not a new problem for the county.

"It's going to happen again, but we will try to minimize them," Council Member Gary Loftus said. Loftus explained emergency medical services are going to be provided for everyone.
The county wrote off the millions for financial accounting purposes.
