GARDEN CITY BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Garrett Gainey spent his afternoon playing some basketball off dogwood Drive, and last night those same courts were about the only dry place in the area.

"It was terrible, like you can see there's still water on the ground everywhere," explained Gainey, who is in town visiting.

Gainey said he's never seen this area flood like it did Saturday night. The flooding drowned the roads and it seemed like nothing could avoid the water.

"It got in all the cars and everything. People's cars were bottoming out."

He and his family tried to drive through the water, but they found that to be much harder than they imagined. Using what he had at his disposal, he found a new way to get around.

"I was floating in a float going down the street," Gainey laughed. "It was about three feet over the street."

Saturday night's flooding was a result of rain combined with high tide and a super moon. The moon is closer to the earth than normal, so its effect on high tide is greater than it would normally be.

Not only were the roads along the beach at risk, but streets along any type of water had a higher chance of flooding.

"The water was coming in from the marsh and flooding," said Makayla Miller, visiting town from Greensboro.

With all the recent rain, the ground in the area is now saturated. If it rains again, the ground may not absorb the water quick enough.
