Coker College to host DeLoach Center grand opening

HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Coker College will celebrate the grand opening of the new $12 million, Harris E. and Louise H. DeLoach Center Saturday, August 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The family-friendly event will offer refreshments, entertainment, tours of the new 71,000 square-foot facility that features strength and conditioning rooms, a dining area, locker rooms, classrooms and more.

There will also be opportunities for children of all ages to have their picture taken with Striker, the Cobra's mascot.

"The College has enjoyed some exciting moments over the five years since Nancy, Lara and I joined this community but none prouder than this one," said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

"The long-time dream of having a state-of-the art athletics center in which our students can learn and compete has been shared not only by members of the Coker College family, but by members of the Hartsville community as well," Wyatt added. "We are humbled by the generosity of all who have helped to make this dream a reality."

Harris E. DeLoach Jr. served as chairman and chief executive officer at Sonoco until he retired in 2013.

The event is free and open to the public.

    Educators of the future are taking a stand, following a vigil held on the camps of Coastal Carolina University honoring the 17 lives lost in a Florida shooting. CCU students Tyler Bealmear and Kaycelyn Laymon have a love and passion for children and education, their hearts broken by the tragedy, but each refusing to let situations like these continue.
